Putin instructed the government to explore the issue of accelerating the construction of the NLR

Russian President Vladimir Putin instructed the government to consider accelerating the implementation of the project for the construction of the Northern Latitudinal Railway (NLR).

The list of the President's instructions following the meeting with the moderators of the key sessions of the Eastern Economic Forum has been published on the Kremlin's website.

A report on this issue shall be made before December 1 of this year.

As reported, the initiator of the construction of the port of Indiga (Nenets Autonomous Okrug) at a meeting of the president with the moderators of key sessions of the EEF-2021 linked their project with the idea of building the NLR.

"The construction of a section of the NLR will allow to connect the Sverdlovsk and Northern railways ("Russian Railways") and enter the non-freezing part of the Barents Sea in the Indiga region.

Most of this railway route has already been built, two sections that need to be completed are discussed, "said Roman Trotsenko, head of the AEON corporation.

"This will allow goods from the Novosibirsk region, Kuzbass and transit from Kazakhstan to be exported to "deep water", which is one and a half times shorter than the Trans-Siberian, and unload it for more expensive transportation like container cargo", - the businessman argue in favor of this proposal.

"As for the access to the Barents Sea, we have been studying this project for a long time, we are proposing it. Let's come back to this again. Of course, this is a good project, and we need to continue working on it in order to relieve the Transsib - this is absolutely true even from a strategic point of view for the future," the head of state said.

As reported, the creation of the NLR (Obskaya-Salekhard-Nadym-Khorey) with a capacity of 23.9 million tons of cargo per year is intended to reduce the length of transport routes from fields in the northern regions of Western Siberia to the ports of the Baltic, Barents and Kara Seas, as well as to ensure the development of the Arctic. The main project participants - Russian Railways, Gazprom and the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug shall finance the reconstruction of their own railway infrastructure, and the construction of new facilities will be performed by the concession owner.
