NOVATEK plans to increase LNG production to 40 million tons per year in 2025 and launch the Obsk MCC in 2027

In 2026-2030 NOVATEK plans to increase LNG production to 56-70 million tons per year.

NOVATEK plans to increase production of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to 40 million tons per year in 2025.

This is stated in the materials of the company for the Forum of Contractors and Suppliers, which was held on October 15, 2021 on the basis of the Center for the Construction of Large-Capacity Offshore Structures (CCLCOS) in the village of Belokamenka, the Murmansk region.

Arctic LNG-2 and beyond

The growth in LNG production will be ensured by the launch of the third line of the Arctic LNG-2 plant.

It was originally scheduled to be launched one year later, in 2026.

Let us recall that Arctic LNG-2 will consist of 3 technological trains with a capacity of 6.6 million tons per year each (total capacity 19.8 million tons per year) with the launch dates for the first 2 trains in 2023 and in 2024 respectively.

The accelerated launch of the third train of Arctic LNG-2 was announced by the head of NOVATEK L. Mikhelson at a meeting with Russian President V. Putin in May 2021 and confirmed at the LNG Producer-Consumer Conference-2021 in early October 2021.

LNG production growth by NOVATEK:

  • in 2023, after the commissioning of the 1st train - up to 26 million tons per year;
  • in 2024 after the commissioning of the 2nd train - up to 33 million tons per year;
  • in 2025, with the commissioning of the third train - 40 million tons per year.

In 2026-2030 NOVATEK plans to increase LNG production to 56-70 million tons per year.

Earlier it was reported that NOVATEK's plans for 2024-2030 include the construction of 4 more liquefaction trains with a total capacity of more than 26 million tons per year.

We are talking about the Arctic LNG-1 project with a capacity of 20 million tons per year, which will become the 3rd LNG project of NOVATEK after the operating Yamal LNG and the Arctic LNG-2 under construction.

The resource base for the Arctic LNG-1 project will be the Soletsko-Khanaveyskoye, Trekhbugornoye and Geofizicheskoye fields and the North-Gydan subsoil area.

The launch of LNG transshipment complexes in the Murmansk region and on the Kamchatka Peninsula is still scheduled for 2022.

The Obsk Mining and Chemical Combine

NOVATEK plans to launch the Obsk Gas Chemical Complex (MCC) in 2027.

The capacity of the MCC will be 2.2 million tons per year of ammonia and 0.13 million tons per year of hydrogen.

NOVATEK is considering 2 options for the location of the Mining and Chemical Combine:

  • gravity base structure next to the coast (by analogy with Arctic LNG-2),
  • on land next to the coast.

Earlier, at the Tyumen Oil and Gas Forum, Deputy Chairman of the Board, Director for Geology of NOVATEK S. Solovyov spoke about a pilot project for the production of ammonia as part of the Obsk Gas Chemical Combine.

The company is also studying the issue of disposal of CO2 generated during production; the task has been entrusted to the Tyumen Technological Scientific Center.

The Obsky MCC project is being performed on the resource base of the Verkhnetiuteyskoye and Zapadno-Seyakhinskoye fields, next to the village of Sabetta, where the Yamal LNG plant is situated.

Initially, NOVATEK planned to build another LNG plant, the Obsk LNG, on this resource base using its own technology, the Arctic cascade based on Russian equipment.

After problems with equipment on the 4th Yamal LNG train, created using this technology, the project was reoriented to gas chemistry.

Now design studies are underway for the project; NOVATEK plans to adopt a final investment decision (FID) for the Obsk MCC in 2022.
